THE ROUTE:
Patallaqta:
Located at an altitude of 2840
meters, a distance of 4 km away at
Kilometer 82 and 5 hour walk to
reach the first camp.
Patallaqta is an archaeological
complex located on the lower course
of the road. According to Ann
Kendall, a British Archaeologist,
who said that probably served as “a
pit stop for Incas traveling between
Cusco and Machu Picchu.”
Huayllabamba:
Located at 3000 meters above sea
level at a distance of 7 km from the
starting point (km 82) and 3 km away
from Patallaqta.
Known only from the year 1912 when
he was visited by Hiram Bingham in a
scientific expedition. Currently
Huayllabamba camp is a hub for
visitors taking trek.
Warmi Wañusca:
Located at 4265 meters, a distance
of 20 km from the starting point at
km 82 and 9 km from Huayllabamba.
Translated means “The Dead Woman’s
pass” by the form of the arrangement
of terrain that represent a woman
lying on her back.
Warmi Wañusca is the highest point
on the stretch of trek. On the way
to open Warmi Wañusca can clearly
see that the landscape changes from
Sierra to Puna.
Pacaymayu:
It is located approximately 3 km
from Warmi Wañusca, the second camp
in the route.
The camps are subject to disposition
of the INC, regulatory institution
of the Inca Trail.
Runkurakay:
It is
located at 3700 meters, was
discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1915.
According to Dr. Paul Fejos,
Runkurakay was a “Tambo” or resting
place. The structure shows a
chambers and courtyards, the form of
this complex is like a circle which
possibly was cover for thatched. It
has inclined walls that are built to
withstand earthquakes. Like the
Qoricancha, Runkurakay has open
passageways pointing toward
different paths of the empire.
Sayacmarca:
Located at 3600 meters. Discovered
by Hiram Bingham when he followed
the old Inca Road from Machu Picchu.
The ruin is inaccessible on three
sides by steep drops down to the
jungle below. Sayacmarca lies on a
fork of the Inca Trail, with one
fork going to Machu Picchu and the
other to the Aobamba Valley and the
Santa Teresa River.
It is an ancient build constructed
by the enemies of the Incas, the
Collas and was adapted by the Incas,
but know is not possible to sure
what was the real purpose of the
ruins.
Phuyupatamarca:
Located at 3570 meters. Phuyupatamarca means "town above the
clouds" that fits him perfectly,
because during most of the year the
clouds stagnate below the high
plateau where the city lies.
This stretch of journey has a most
impressive engineering of the Inca
Trail. A Tunnel, pavements and build
up a surface where none existed are
advanced examples about knowledge of
the Incas Culture.
Phuyupatamarca has a splendid view
of the snowy Salcantay and the
Cordillera of Vilcabamba.
Intipata:
Located at 2850 meters, Intipata
means "The town of the sun”, is a

the function primarily an
agricultural settlement and a
strategic function.

are a two areas in the mountain.

of water fountains with chambers
