ABOUT
CITY TOUR:
The city of Arequipa has a great history that dates
back to ancient times (8000 to 6000 years BC) which
we have evidence in their rock art.
The first Spanish settlers of what was to become
Arequipa were the Dominican Fathers who built a
chapel and later a parish in what is now the
district of San Lazaro.
The city re-emerged Caylloma mine and development of
agriculture. In 1870 with the arrival of the
railroad, Arequipa became an important commercial
center in southern Peru.
Called like the White City by the color of its
houses built with ashlar (volcanic stone), was an
important bastion in the struggle for independence
in the nineteenth century. During this century,
there have been several prominent figures that have
arequipeñas in both the political and cultural life
of the country.
Arequipa is Peru's second largest city and was
founded in 1540. The site was chosen for its
proximity to the coast, enabling settlers to trade
the products of Cusco and the mines of Potosi
(Bolivia) with Lima. The local cultivation of wheat,
corn and grapes all contributed to the regions
economic growth.
The city is surrounded by 3 volcanoes; El Misti,
still active at 5,822masl, the higher and extinct
Chachani 6,075masl and Pichu Pichu 5,571masl. The
Incas highly respected these volcanoes since the
melt water from their snow-capped peaks form the
headwaters of the mighty Amazon River, thousands of
kilometers away.

part of the Peruvian country, between the coastal
area of the desert and the spurs of the western
